At DMU, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the future of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Chair is responsible for executing administrative, educational, research, and clinical functions of the Department; managing all faculty, including full-time, part-time, adjunct, emeritus, volunteer, and guest faculty, as well as non-faculty positions; and providing leadership for curriculum instruction and scholarly activity, including research, publications, and funding. Responsibilities include maintaining accreditation of departmental programs, supporting College and University accreditation processes, and assigning faculty FTE distribution across teaching, research, and service to meet institutional needs. The Chair oversees faculty time allocation, departmental budgets, Promotion and Tenure plans, and faculty development opportunities to ensure the educational and financial strength of the Department. Additionally, the Chair represents the department within the College and University organizational structure.
The department chair duties will reflect approximately 25% of the appointment with the remainder dedicated to faculty responsibilities, including teaching, research, and service. While the offered rank upon hire will be determined by the Rank, Tenure and Promotion policy, we anticipate most candidates will meet the requirements of associate or full professor.
We are particularly interested in individuals with expertise in teaching medical physiology or pharmacology topics related to the gastrointestinal and/or endocrine systems, as well as introductory and foundational pharmacology concepts. Candidates with a research program that can complement the department focus on cardiovascular, neurophysiology, or neuropharmacology research are also highly encouraged to apply.
What you’ll do:
- Responsible for developing departmental vision and mission statements, developing and implementing short-range and long-range departmental goals consistent with the University strategic plan and directives from the Dean, preparing the department for accreditation and evaluation, and facilitating training in accordance with accreditation standards of accrediting and professional organizations.
- Provide day-to-day direction of the department by scheduling and conducting departmental meetings, establishing departmental committees as needed, and ensuring student instruction, advising and assessment are provided.
- Responsible for communication between the department and the College Dean (and other Administrative Heads as appropriate) regarding needs of the department and its faculty. The Chair will also be responsible for keeping the department faculty informed of University regulations, plans, and activities as appropriate.
- Responsible for development and administration of the departmental budget and maintenance of departmental financial records.
- Responsible for assignment of space within the department in consideration of job duties and resource allocations.
What we are looking for:
- Earned doctorate from an accredited university in a relevant field.
- Experience or interest in teaching in any of the following fields: gastrointestinal physiology, endocrine pharmacology, gastrointestinal pharmacology, and/or foundational pharmacology
- Academic rank as a senior faculty member at the level of Associate or Full Professor. (Rank upon hire will be determined by the Rank, Tenure and Promotion (RPT) policy, as interpreted by the RPT Committee.)
- Five years of faculty experience, preferably in a medical school or health sciences college or university.
- Experience in administration at the department level is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated accomplishments in research, and a desire to develop a credible research program within the department.
- Ability to effectively mentor subordinate faculty within the department.
