Des Moines University, in an exciting partnership with the Des Moines Buccaneers, is seeking a dynamic and driven Athletic Trainer to join our team. This unique opportunity blends professional sports with academic excellence, offering the chance to serve as the official Athletic Trainer for the Des Moines Buccaneers while also contributing to broader wellness and education initiatives during the off-season. As a key healthcare provider, you’ll play a vital role in injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement across a variety of athletic settings—all while representing two respected organizations committed to health, education, and community impact.
What you’ll do:
- Adheres to professional, ethical and legal standards of practice and is responsible for working within the Iowa Athletic Training Practice Act, Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers Standards of Professional Practice, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), HIPPA, and other legal mandates.
- Commits to Des Moines University and the Clinic's mission and vision.
- Provides exceptional athletic training services to teams and organization contracted: management of injuries and illnesses including prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation for the Des Moines Buccaneers. Other potential assignments in the off-season might include: football, hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, lacrosse, rugby, gymnastics, and more. The Athletic Trainer works under direct supervision of a physician in accordance with Iowa State law practice act. These services may occur during the week, evening, and weekends. (60%)
- Assist with building, supervising, and implementing customized workshops/classes for prevention of injuries, conditioning, and sports performance classes. (2%)
- Provide timely and accurate documentation / tracking of athletic injuries per DMU guidelines. (5%)
- Provide accommodation recommendations, related to sport, for athletes with restrictions or limitations. (2%)
- Performs first aid, emergency care and referral to required medical care as deemed necessary. (5%)
- Communicate with physicians, rehabilitation team and coaching staff regarding injury status and return to play for the athletes. (10%)
- Minimize risk of injury through awareness, education, and prevention strategies. (5%)
- Maintain athletic training supply inventory. (2%)
- Participate in and successfully complete all University required training including, but not limited to discrimination/harassment and code of conduct. (2%)
- Represent Des Moines University while building community relationships and portraying a professional image. (5%)
- Responsible for other duties as assigned by supervisor to support clinic goals. (2%)
What we are looking for:
- Years of Experience: 1-3
- Education: Must be a graduate from an accredited athletic training program.
- Certifications/Licenses: Must be NATA BOC certified and possess an Iowa athletic training license. CPR certified. Driver’s license in good standing.
